The idea of a gathering of the non-Western parts of the Communion for mutual consultation on their distinctive contextual mission challenges was a recommendation of the Brisbane 1986 Missions Conference. Subsequently, Anglican Consultative Council (ACC) organized this gathering and Global South first came together in the 1st South-South Encounter held in Limuru, Kenya in 1994. The 2nd South-South Encounter was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1997. The 3rd Encounter was held in Ein El Sukhna on 25-30 October 2005 with the theme “One, Holy Catholic & Apostolic Church: Being A Faithful Church For Such A Time As This.” The 4th Encounter was held in Singapore on 19th – 23rd April 2010 with theme “The Gospel of Jesus Christ - Covenant for the People; Light for the Nations.”
A Conference on the Decade of Mission and Networking was held on July 16 - 21, 2012 at Bangkok, Thailand, with the theme “Be Transformed by the Renewing of the Mind to Obedience of Faith for Holistic Mission in a Radically Changing Global Landscape."
This website was set up after the 3rd Encounter to carry the materials from the event and to follow-up work as laid out in the communique, especially the Third Trumpet. It has since become both a news site and a theological forum for issues of concern to Global South Provinces. Apart from official releases, the views of contributors to this site (especially in the Theology & Views section) do not necessary reflect the views of the Global South body.
