Latest News - Multiple Resolutions Await Bishops on Monday at New Orleans

At least five “mind of the house” resolutions have been submitted for plenary discussion by the House of Bishops before their meeting concludes Sept. 25. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori had previously requested that all resolutions for consideration be submitted no later than Sept. 20, the meeting’s opening day.

Copies of the proposed resolutions, along with other reports and documents, have been made available near the entrance to the New Orleans conference room where the bishops are meeting. Some of the resolutions bear the signed endorsement of more than one bishop; however no formal discussion of resolutions is scheduled before Monday.

The Rt. Rev. Henry N. Parsley, Bishop of Alabama, has submitted draft language of a response to all of the requests the primates made of the House of Bishops in the Feb. 19 communiqué from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. In it, Bishop Parsley notes that General Convention has already responded affirmatively to the questions for clarification on same-sex blessings and homosexual bishops in monogamous relationships. He recommends that the matter be referred to the Anglican Consultative Council.

The Rt. Rev. Pierre W. Whalon, Bishop in charge of the Convocation of American Churches in Europe, said the primates’ communiqué raises important questions about the nature of authority in the Anglican Communion which should be studied.

A resolution from the Rt. Rev. Dean E. Wolfe, Bishop of Kansas, expresses disapproval of uninvited border crossing by other Anglican partner churches, and pledges the bishops to work more fervently for deeper unity in the future.

The other two resolutions contain nearly identical language, but have only one signature in common, that of the Rt. Rev. Geralyn Wolf, Bishop of Rhode Island. On July 2, the Rt. Rev. Charles E. Jenkins, Bishop of Louisiana, sent a letter to Bishop Jefferts Schori and enclosing a resolution which he described as “a plea for compassion, mercy, and a united way forward.” The resolution, which also contains the endorsement of 11 other bishops, calls on members of the House of Bishops to end permission for same-sex blessings, deny consent to the consecration of partnered gay bishops and provide for groups alienated by recent developments in The Episcopal Church.

The other resolution, sponsored by the Rt. Rev. D. Bruce MacPherson, Bishop of Western Louisiana, and three others, cites different reasoning and General Convention actions in its footnotes to propose the same three actions.

Bishop Jefferts Schori has appointed a small group of bishops to a drafting group. The group is led by the Rt. Rev. Wayne P. Wright, Bishop of Delaware, but it is not known what the Presiding Bishop has asked them to do or when they have been asked to produce a draft.

Just prior to his departure from New Orleans, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams told The Living Church that the primates will be consulted as part of the process of evaluating whether The Episcopal Church has satisfactorily complied with the primates’ requests, but he has not decided whether to call for another primates’ meeting before the Lambeth Conference of Bishops meets next July.

Briefly elaborating on his remark at Friday’s press conference that there was room for maneuverability between the expectations of the communiqué and an acceptable response by the House of Bishops, he said that because he was unaware of any alternate proposal by the House of Bishops to the primates’ pastoral scheme, he could not speak to its adequacy. “There’s simply no way to say,” he said.

Four bishops left the meeting after Archbishop Williams’ departure. Bishops Keith Ackerman of Quincy, Robert Duncan of Pittsburgh, Jack Iker of Fort Worth and Donald Parsons, the retired Bishop of Quincy, said they attended the House of Bishops’ meeting out of respect to Archbishop Williams. All three dioceses have requested alternate primatial oversight, and in recent weeks the bishops have said their dioceses will consider proposals to leave The Episcopal Church at their annual meetings later this fall.

  1. From the above posting; it would seem that the Bishops of Quincy, Pittsburgh & Fort Worth, despite their ‘respect for Archbishop Williams’, are intent on moving their dioceses away from the Episcopal Church of the USA.

    This has serious, implications for those faithful Anglicans within those dioceses who wish to remain part of ECUSA and the historic world-wide Anglican Communion.

    What will happen, one can only suppose, is that the bishops concerned - and those of their parishes and congregations that elect to go along with them - will join the federation of ecclesial prelates ordained in overseas provinces of the Anglican Church to set up a rival communion in the USA called CANA - a body not yet recognised as part of the Anglican Communion.

    This action surely pre-empts any decision of the remaining Body of the Anglican Churches to try to prevent further schismatic devolution.

    The Primates of the Global South are directly responsible for this state of affairs - where schism has become a preferable alternative to constructive dialogue - and must bear the responsibility for their actions in defying the directives of Dar es Salaam not to attempt any interference in the polity of other provinces by the ordination of ‘missionary’ clergy to serve in those provinces.

    This defiance of the Tanzania Declaration is no less reprehensible than any action taken by ECUSA to ordain women and gays as clergy in their own province, over which it has legal jurisdiction

    What is being spoken about in the previous positing is the illicit acquisition of authority by certain prelates of the Global South to ordain their own representatives CANA-nites to undermine the legitimate authority of ECUSA in the USA.

    What we are talking about here is not sexuality per se, but an act of subversion of the canonical authority of ECUSA on its own ground - surely as iniquitous an act as any perceived to have been taken by any in the Church whose integrity the usurpers would claim to uphold?

    This matter of authority needs to be sorted before any meaningful discussiopn can take place within the Anglican Communion on other matters.

  16. I find article #15 by Gary Morrow impossible to respond to, on account of its vitriol and lack of any semblance of theological understanding. Also, it is nothing less than a cowardly attack on the Presiding Bishop of ECUSA, who probably has more intelligence and compassion than many of the male bishops of the CANA (soon to be extinguished?) fraternity, and certainly more than has been demonstrated by G.M. so far in his correspondence.

    In my final response to Gerry O’Brien, in post #14, I can only say that - now the communique from ECUSA’s Meeting of its House of Bishops has been issued - the Global South has no more excsue to interfere in the polity and direction of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America

    H.O.B. has agreeed on a moratorium to withhold the ordination of celibate gay Christians - until such time as the world-wide Anglican Communion can come to a common mind on this important issue of justice in the Church. This seems to me to be a remarkable act of restraint on the part of TEC -requiring now an equal restraint on the part of those overseas bishops and provinces who have already ordained clergy for ‘mission’ in the legally constituted Church of ECUSA.

    When will we have an equivalent statement from Archbishop Akinola and his cohorts on the global South that they, too, will have a moratorium on their ordination of ‘mission’ clergy for incursion into other Provinces of the Church?

    One cannot help but think that this whole sad hullabaloo was more about the lust for political power than radical Christian theology.

  19. TEC and it’s HofBishops has done nothing but cajole, speak around issues and outright lie for many years now.  They feel they can stop the overseas Bishops and Primates, but they cannot stop God’s Work.  California has already gone against the HofB resolutions as will the rest.

    As for the AofC and the twisted thinking of the HoB saying that they support the AofC in getting Gene Robinson to Lambeth....as for now...that is shooting off a large cannon in itself.

    Not surprised at the AofC saying such a thing...I just plain don’t have any trust in Canterbury at this point anymore.
