Bishop Duncan responded to Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori’s letter

1st November, A.D. 2007
The Feast of All Saints

The Most Revd Katharine Jefferts Schori
Episcopal Church Center
New York, New York

Dear Katharine,

Here I stand. I can do no other. I will neither compromise the Faith once delivered to the saints, nor will I abandon the sheep who elected me to protect them.

Pax et bonum in Christ Jesus our Lord,

+Bob Pittsburgh

    Comments & Responses

  1. It is most regrettable TEC by its apostate acts has put faithful bishops like +Bob and faithful parishes along with their rectors in a position that demands this sacrificial act to “choose this day.” My prayer is that God will be +Bob’s (and all the others) ever present support and guide through the troubles ahead as He has to this point. My prayer is also that the Presiding Bishop and those of her mindset will repent of their sin in this matter and act to put the affairs of TEC right in the eyes of God.

  2. The prayer of Jesus - “That they may be one, Father, as you and I are one - so that the world may believe it was you who sent me”

What a sad travesty it is that ‘faithful bishops’ should elect to opt out of the Church, for what has been revealed to be their own inability to grow within the life-enhancing and ongoing reformation espoused by our Anglican ethos.

Ah well! One supposes that this will be yet one more threat to the visible unity of the Church, which, however, will not prevent the Gospel from embracing the outcast and poor of the world.

May God’s life-giving Holy Spirit keep the rest of us together in a unity that will survive the call of the intransigent. Blessed be God!

  3. “Father” Guido, Christ indeed calls us to seek out the least and the lost to be raised above their spiritually impoverished state. Offering them a sham amalgam of apostasy and faithfulness does them no service that can’t be provided better by secular charity. TEC’s apostasy has created a new and very different religion that tries to pass itself as the real article. However, it most certainly isn’t Christian and is therefore far from what Christ would seek His body “all to be one” in. Make no mistake. I regard TEC as a non-Christian, secular humanist religion. Assuming you are in accord with what TEC is doing, I must, sadly, put you in the same category. You, therefore, are no priest of Christ and your words are babble.

  4. Mr Arlen, (who seems to be obsessed with his favourite cult figure - Fr. Guido) needs to be freed from cultic obsessiveness with his personal fantasy. Such a weakness would seem to stem from a basic insecurity and probably needs some sort of professional treatment. I’m sure his psycho-therapist would be able to advise him. I would advise no more Saturday night TV for the rest of the year.

The fact that he ragards TEC as ‘non-Christian’ does not automatically mean it is a fact. (This may, perhaps, be another symptom of his fantasy) Perhaps he needs a little more tuition in basic ecclesiology and Gospel Christianity before making such pronouncements - that sound eerily like his fellow correspondent on this site - one Gary M. - whose nocturnal ramblings add scarcely any light to the arguments being debated.

The unity of the Church is something that the world-wide Anglican Church prays for in the daily celebration of the Eucharist. To any faithful Anglican, immersed in the ethos of our catholic and reformed tradition, this is primarily the duty of every priest at the altar:

“We break this Bread, to share in the Body of Christ”. Also, “We are one Bread, one Body, for we all share in the One Bread” (who is Christ).

  5. “Father” Guido your assertion that you and your ilk have discovered the “new thing” God is doing is merely your opinion. Opinions are like belly buttons - we all have them. And your opinion is no more valid than mine.

You seem much taken with your educational credentials. Degrees come from many places and are only worth the exchange value of the paper they are printed on unless they are usefully applied. The fruits of research can quickly become no more than opinion when the desired result is just too worthy to deny.

Faith on the other hand must be grounded on something. For me it is the Word of God delivered in the Bible. Please don’t bother to go to the lame and ridiculous questions about wearing clothes of mixed fiber, Bible idol worship and those other silly throw-aways you favor so much. The Bible delivers enduring guidance that is the underpinning of faith. TEC chooses to lift selected parts out of context to justify its erroneous understanding of God’s “new thing” which looks very much like the Gnostic’s “old thing.”

You have referred on several occasions to a single verse lifted out of context from John 17 as the basis for all of us coming together on God’s “new thing.” The unity Jesus prayed for in John 17 refers directly to a thoroughly and logically explained unity of believers centered on God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. It is not the false unity of kumbaya consensus centered on the heart’s desire of Narcissistic malcontents that forms the basis for TEC’s sham. Note the location from which the prayer in John 17 is delivered - after leaving the Upper Room and before arriving at the Garden of Gethsemane. Some have written Jesus made this prayer in a temple along the way. If so, one of the distinguishing features of a temple along the route was the prominent image of a grape vine that shows great detail of the vine’s health and decay. Referring to John 15 which uses the image of the vine as the Body of Christ strengthens my assertion that God would have us to unify only around our Triune God and reject phony fads of the moment.

As to TEC being non-Christian, let’s just pick one example from a waste can of possibilities. It is common dogma among the highest TEC leadership that John 14 is just too exclusionary and divisive. The reading from John 14 at the Presiding Bishop’s investiture and installation at the Washington National Cathedral omitted the second half of John 14:6. Asked afterward about it the PB said, “If we insist we know the one way to God, we’ve put God in a very small box.” Here in nutshell is TEC’s denial of Jesus Christ and the sum of evidence by which I reject TEC’s claim it is a Christian denomination. Christianity is quite demanding. If you don’t buy all of it, there is no reason to buy any of it.

The bottom line is I believe you and yours know what your distorted sense of justice requires and you will lie to yourselves and work hard to deceive others to see the desired end achieved.

The good news is God is in charge and He will prevail. I’m delighted to live with that singularity.

“Father” Guido, I implore you to buy into all of Christ’s message and make it your own. Every bit of it. And by doing so you will become Father Ron anew. On the other hand, a millstone hung around a preacher’s neck is an ugly thing to lug around a hot place for eternity.

  6. I cannot answer on behalf of Rick’s fantasy (fancy) man, Fr. Guido, but I can say that my personal faith is based on the PERSON of JESUS CHRIST.

He is the Son of God - the WORD-made-FLESH - whose living reality has been made available to all baptised believers in the Holy Communion, the Eucharist, or the Mass.

To place anyone or anything - even the Bible - before Christ himself is to retreat into the
pre-Christian era, before God made Himself known to us as a PERSON, in the Breaking of the Bread.

    See the Apostles Creed,
    which I still affirm.

  7. This paragraph fits the mold of Father Ron Guido Sarducci Smith-
“But it’s not about equal rights. That’s simply the strategic sound-byte. It’s about taking human experience and desire, laying it up next to Holy Scripture, and asserting that it’s the Holy Scripture that’s in error and has been for these almost two thousand years. That behaviors - not just sexual orientations, which are completely neutral - are not only acceptable, but that bishops and priests should now both affirm and call down God’s blessing upon them.”

  9. Father Guido, you are no phantom. You have a website - http://www.fathersarducci.com/. Don’t be modest. You certainly are a more real a person than TEC is a real church.

But you also are so predictable. First crack out of the box and we are back to the Bible as idol. You need new writers.

Question. What is the principal text we could select to learn about Jesus Christ and what he would have us do and be in this world? Want something widely regarded as true and authoritative. Must have stood the tests of time and close analysis. Should even be something people feel so strongly about that many have been willing to die for the beliefs it proclaims. What could it be?

(We now enter the fantasyland of Father Guido Think)
Hey, the Quran talks a little about Jesus. And people are dying for it willingly as suicide murderers today!

Or there is the Bhagavad Gita. It addresses how we should behave. And the Beatles liked it lots.

I guess we could go to the Bible. God says He is the author (through inspiring the writings of men) so it must be pretty much on the mark so far as His Son is concerned. Only problem is that if you take it just as it is, it is so “one way.” I mean it has commandments and says there is only Christ as the answer. So Exclusive. Make me uncomfortable and I fell all icky because it gets in the way of what I want. It is good that it is genuine primary source material and all, but there is that possibility that we might make an idol of the Bible and lose track of what is really important.

I know the perfect answer. Lets use all the books on religions thought we can find plus everything we can sense in God’s creation as our guide to His Son. We’ll just soak it all in and meditate on it really seriously and out of our wonderful brains (which God created, so they must be just dandy for this purpose) we’ll define Jesus Christ just as we think He should be. Perfect!
(We now exit the fantasyland of Father Guido Think)

    I have a headache.

Father Guido, the Bible is not an idol. And it certainly isn’t my idol. It is our owner’s manual offered to us by YHWH through the writings of men He inspired to do His will. Surely you were taught this in seminary. We have no idol. We have the Living God in Three Persons.

Come on, man! Shed the false Father Guido and become Father Ron. Come back to the faith once delivered.

  10. Father Guido Can’t become Father Ron because he ‘is doing something’ that the Bible, the Word, is instructing him ‘not’ to do.
What are you doing Ron Guido that is in violation of God’s Word, Laws, and Commandments?

  11. What must be remembered is that the Word of God was not meant to remain between the covers of a book - holy as that book might seem to be - especially to certain scholars of the Church. In other words, the Book is a guide only to the ultimate reality of the God who has - according to orthodox Christian theology - been revealed to us once ands for all at the Incarnation of his Blessed Son, Jesus Christ - Word-made-flesh (Father Ron Smith on 07/29 at 10:05 AM)!

“...holy as that book might seem to be…”

    “...might seem to be…”

    “...might seem…”

    “...might…”

    “...seem…”

  12. Gary, my intent in post #9 was to call on “Father” Guido to repent, seek forgiveness and renew his life. In so doing “Father” Guido would be replaced by the true and renewed Father Ron - a Father Ron TEC would despise. I honestly pray this for him.

Posted by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)  on  11/07  at  02:08 AM
  13. Rick, I respectfully understand, and I could have worded that paragraph better. What I was putting forward is that no matter your call for Father Guido to repent—he will not repent because maybe repenting would mean for him to change his lifestyle, or change from a situation, or belief that he doesn’t want to leave.

Posted by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)  on  11/07  at  03:52 AM
  14. Gary, thanks for your reply. I, too, have my doubts that “Father” Guido is prepared to throw away the junk to get the bountiful treasure, but ‘ya gotta try. I certainly realize I’m not in charge of his choices. But I do pray for him and those of his ilk. Their prospects may not be very desirable if they don’t get on board.

  15. “Idle babbling.” That’s what the Apostle Paul called conversations such as these. They discredit Christ and His Church. Perhaps in the future there could be conversation that edifies? Or at least discussion of the topic?

  18. “...the Church can no longer close its eyes to the realities of life which have been revealed to us by medical, “”“psychological”“” and social, scientific research (Father Ron Smith on 09/15 at 07:51 AM).

“...with experts from the “”“sociological”“” and “”“psychological”“” community “meeting with” serious theologians who are willing to open their eyes to the real world around them(Father Ron Smith on 08/03 at 06:29 AM).

“Even today, priestly orders contract with psychologists to perform the initial interviews with candidates for the seminary. For the presumed sake of objectivity, these orders do not necessarily hire Catholics or even Christians.

Given the humanistic bias of the profession, these psychologists tend to see flexibility and open-mindedness as virtues and traditionalism as a vice.” :
